Though these pictures were taken in California, not Kansas, they date from the teens.

The Sweet, Sad Songs of W. F. Pine

The Sweet, Sad Songs of W.F. Pine, my novel-under-construction, opens in Kansas in 1913, when W.F. Pine is a boy.

Prairie Schooner published an excerpt -- "Pity My Simplicity" -- in 2003, giving it a Reader's Choice Award. "Pity My Simplicity" is listed among the "Recommended Stories" in The O. Henry Prize Stories, 2005.

I'll be posting a page or two now and then. Here the Pines drive to an abandoned church (and graveyard) for a picnic. They have just survived typhoid's most recent pass down Beaver Creek.

Also California, in the early twenties.
